| | | | | | From Srila Prabhupada: The main point is that "In God we trust," on this slogan... So the same point that, "What do you mean by God and what do you mean by trust? That you do not know." So you have to explain what is God and what is trust, thoroughly, from our books. Our point of propaganda should be that "It is very good that you write this slogan, 'In God we trust,' but nobody has got clear conception of God; neither they do not know what is the meaning of trust. Under the circumstances, so you have to learn it scientifically. And our propaganda is like that, to teach actually what is God and what is trust. And you important men of the state, you come forward, try to understand, and open schools, colleges. Make it perfectly known what is God. And make America strong. As the Communist party, they are preaching godlessness, now America should preach, 'No, in God we trust.' Now there should be a fight, not on the political point of view, but actually it includes everything. A class of men godless and a class of men who knows God. There should be fight. Then there will be peace in the world. The class of men who do not believe in God, they should be punished, because they are creating all the troubles. A man who trusts in God, he is the ideal man. He will never create any trouble. Therefore this science should be learned very scientifically. And we are prepared. And you also must be able to teach them. Then it will be successful." -- "In God We Trust -- Meaning What," Morning Walk, December 18th, 1973 |
| | | | | Gunagrahi das Goswami - Pointing the Finger I just came across a wonderful verse and purport that is directly connected with the interesting themes we discussed in the blog entries of November 9 th., December 18 th., and January 11th (in the last 3 Katha newsletters). If you haven't read those yet, you might want to look them over before reading the below. This subject matter has received wide interest everywhere I have travelled because of its great relevancy to our personal lives and to our interactions with others. In the verse you are going to read now, Maharaja Pariksit, at the onset of the age of Kali, is responding to the humble understanding presented by the bull, the personality of religion, after he was questioned by the king as to who was the responsible for the bull's great suffering. SB 1.17.22 TRANSLATION The King said: O you, who are in the form of a bull! You know the truth of religion, and you are speaking according to the principle that the destination intended for the perpetrator of irreligious acts is also intended for one who identifies the perpetrator. You are no other than the personality of religion. PURPORT A devotee's conclusion is that no one is directly responsible for being a benefactor or mischief-monger without the sanction of the Lord; therefore he does not consider anyone to be directly responsible for such action. But in both the cases he takes it for granted that either benefit or loss is God-sent, and thus it is His grace. In case of benefit, no one will deny that it is God-sent, but in case of loss or reverses one becomes doubtful about how the Lord could be so unkind to His devotee as to put him in great difficulty. Jesus Christ was seemingly put into such great difficulty, being crucified by the ignorant, but he was never angry at the mischief-mongers. That is the way of accepting a thing, either favorable or unfavorable. Thus for a devotee the identifier is equally a sinner, like the mischief-monger. By God's grace, the devotee tolerates all reverses. Maharaja Pariksit observed this, and therefore he could understand that the bull was no other than the personality of religion himself. In other words, a devotee has no suffering at all because so-called suffering is also God's grace for a devotee who sees God in everything. The cow and bull never placed any complaint before the King for being tortured by the personality of Kali, although everyone lodges such complaints before the state authorities. The extraordinary behavior of the bull made the King conclude that the bull was certainly the personality of religion, for no one else could understand the finer intricacies of the codes of religion. Prabhupada is again driving the point home that we are not to cast blame upon other individuals who have apparently done us wrong. Rather, it is Krsna that is causing our suffering due to our own past misdeeds. And by doing so, He is allowing us to deeply reflect on how inappropriate it has been and will be for us to unnecessarily cause pain. He has arranged that our lives be filled with continuous opportunities for deep reflection and learning, and if we accept what befalls us bearing that in mind, we can greatly accelerate our advancement. His Holiness Gunagrahi das Goswami joined ISKCON in Buffalo, NY, in November of 1969 and was initiated by His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in 1971. He accepted the order of Sannyas in 1983. In 1997, he accepted leadership responsibilities in Argentina and Uruguay, and presently oversees those countries as Zonal Secretary. He travels widely in North and South America to counsel, teach, and present Krishna Consciousness. He is based at the ISKCON temple in Buenos Aires. |
A Cautionary Note: Non Vegetarian Silver foil on sweets (Varakh) During this festive season I wanted to caution you on the use of silver foil or what is referred to as Varak (Varakh) on India sweets. Even sweets from "100% vegetarian shops" sometimes use this material on their sweets. During the process of making this foil it becomes non-vegetarian since the intestines of bull/ox are used to hammer this thin layer of foil out. For devotees the same animals that we love and protect are being used in this way and unfortunately during the month of Damodar the demand for sweets and thus silver foil is at the peak.
