| | | | | | From Srila Prabhupada: If you want actual peace, atma, suprasidati, then you have to accept paro dharma. Para means supreme or superior. There are two kinds of dharmas, para and apara. Apara means this material world. Bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh kham mano buddhir eva ca. There are two natures, one spiritual nature and one material nature. People do not understand what is spiritual nature. But Krsna explains very nicely, and one can understand very easily what is spiritual nature and what is material nature. -- "The Religion Above All Cheating," Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.2.5, October 9, 1976, Aligarh Read and hear the entire lecture |
| | | | | Prabhupada Katha by Bhakti Charu Swami I first met Srila Prabhupada in a dream. I got a book written by Srila Prabhupada, Nectar of Devotion, and as I started to read it, from the very first page it occurred to me that this is what I was actually looking for. And the next night I had a dream of Srila Prabhupada. And I saw Srila Prahupada was sitting on a majestic throne and those days I did not know what a vyasasana was, because in India the saintly people they sit on a rather simple seat, they don't sit on such a gorgeous throne, it looks rather like a throne. So I saw Srila Prabhupada sitting on a throne. And there was a brilliant light around Srila Prabhupada, as if the light was coming out of his body. And just the sight of Srila Prabhupada made me feel that finally I found my spiritual master. I was in India, I was searching for a spiritual master, and prior to that I was in Europe. And when I went back to India, I went back with an idea, as soon as I go back to India, I will find a guru. Because there are so many gurus in India, so to find a guru is not difficult at all but when I went to India and started to meet these saintly people, sadhus, I had a real difficulty in finding somebody to whom I could surrender myself. Because some of them, if not many, looked like some of my hippy friends in the west and then at some point I gave up my search, totally frustrated, thinking that, if at all I have a guru, then let him come and pick me up. I had been searching for him for so long and I could not find him. And when I gave up my search, it was around that time that I got the Nectar of Devotion by Srila Prabhupada. And as I started to read it, it seemed that everything became clear, that this is the path, this is the way. What actually impressed me very much about the Nectar of Devotion, actually from the very first page, was that all this while I was thinking that liberation was the goal of life. But when I started to read Nectar of Devotion, I came to know that there are five kinds of liberation and out of them, one is a negative liberation and four others are positive. I mean, that it just impressed me so much. I felt that here is the real information. Then Prabhupada made it so clear that God is a person. My understanding prior to that was more of an impersonal understanding of God. Some energy some light, no clear understanding whatsoever and then Prabhupada made it so clear that God is a person and Krishna is God. So all my doubts, all my misconceptions were removed in just first two pages of that book and I just kept on reading, I could not stop reading that book. It was so engrossing, it was so fascinating. All the information was so clear and the next night of that dream of Srila Prabhupada, I made up my mind that "This is the path that I am going to take and I am going to surrender to Srila Prabhupada!". Preaching News From Nityananda Chandra: "On Friday, October 1st, Jaya Kesava Prabhu and I taught a wonderful class on Preserving Culture at a Hinduism and Ecology course at UNT in Denton. We were pleasantly surprised as we were walking to the class room, a student came to us and asked, "Are there any kirtan events happening today." I took this a good sign for nice program. The class started out with a live projection with stereo audio of the Temple Room webcam. While listening to the sweet sounds of BB Govinda Swami, the students gazed at the beauty of Sri Sri Radha Kalachandji's arati ceremony. Class was given by Jaya Kesava Prabhu who presented a slide show about Vrindavan and various programs that are there to preserve the ecology. Everyone loved the presentation." |

Recipe Corner Buttermilk Scones Making good scones is not difficult, and they get easier with practice. The two golden rules of scone making are these: Add the wet ingredients to the dry, and mix the dough as briefly and lightly as possible. And remember, the lighter the touch, the lighter the scones. Makes 12 Scones. 1 3/4 cups plain flour 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda 5 tablespoons room temperature unsalted butter 3/4 cup buttermilk, approximately Preheat the oven to 230° C / 450° F. Brush a baking tray with butter. Sift all the dry ingredients together in a bowl (sifting aerates the mix). Rub the butter into the dry mix briefly and lightly, using your fingertips, until fine and crumbly. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients, and add almost all the buttermilk. Mix, using a knife in a quick cutting motion while rotating the bowl. The mixture will come together in small pieces. Mix in the rest of the buttermilk if the mix is too dry. Gather the dough together, and turn it out onto a clean, lightly floured surface. Knead the dough very lightly, folding it back over itself, pressing down, and turning, for 30 - 40 seconds. The dough should have just lost its stickiness. Roll or press the dough out to a flat round about 1.5cm (½-inch) thick. Cut out rounds of about 4 cm (1½ inches). Pile the scraps together and press or roll out, but don't re-knead them. Use up all the dough. Place the scones on the tray
Bake the scones for 10-12 minutes, or until well-risen and golden on top. Remove from the oven. For soft scones, wrap them while warm in a clean tea towel. For scones with a crisp top, transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly. Serve with butter, jam and cream.
