From Srila Prabhupada:   So today is a very nice, auspicious day. On this day Lord Krsna, when He was present on this earth, He attended a solar eclipse ceremony at Kuruksetra, and Krsna, along with His brother Balarama, and Subhadra, sister, came to visit the Kuruksetra field. That Kuruksetra land is still present in India. If someday you'll go to India you'll find that Kuruksetra land is there. So this Ratha-yatra ceremony is performed in commemoration of Krsna's visiting Kuruksetra with His brother and sister. -- "Spiritualize Your Chariot," June 27th, 1971, San Francisco listen to the entire lecture
What is Ratha Yatra?
Rath Yatra is the Festival of Chariots. The Ratha Yatra festival has been traditionally celebrated annually in Jagannatha Puri, Orrisa, where Lord Jagannatha along with His sister Subhadra and elder brother Baladeva parade through the streets of the city.

People throng the streets to pull the giant chariots, chant, and dance and take prasadam given to all joining in a celebration, to honor the appearance of Lord Jagannatha, Baladev and Subhadra.  This takes place on the second day of the waxing phase of the moon of the asadha month. Jagannatha ordered King Indradyumna to take him to his birth place, the Gundica Mandira (symbolically Vrindavana), on this day.

Srila Prabhupada, the Founder Acharya of ISKCON, out of his compassion, introduced Ratha Yatra to the west in 1967 in San Francisco. Since then The Lord of the Universe (Lord Jagannatha) now parades in major cities all over the world such as London, Paris, New York, Durban, Rome, etc.

Significance of Ratha Yatra
Ratha-Yatra signifies the Lord's love for His devotees.

The pulling of Ratha cart during the Ratha Yatra procession by the devotees symbolizes the attempt of the residents of Vrindavan, especially the cowherd boys and girls, to bring Krishna, Balarama and Subhadra back to Vrindavan, to reunite with His dear devotees in Vrindavana, foremost among them, Srimati Radharani.

Befitting the sentiment of its origins, Ratha Yatras in the Hare Krishna movement also serve as reunions for devotees who come from far and wide to participate, meeting up with old friends around their common goal of serving Lord Jagannatha, Sri Krishna

Did you know?
The three chariots of Balarama, Subhadra and Jagannatha are newly constructed every year with wood of specified trees like phassi, dhausa, etc.

Jagannaths' Chariot
is called Nandighosa, and is marked with Cakra and Garuda. It has sixteen wheels, and is decked with a cover made of red and yellow cloth.

Balarama's Chariot
, is called the Taladhwaja, and marked with the palm tree on its flag. It has  fourteen wheels, and is covered with red and blue cloth

Subhadra's Chariot
, known as Dwarpadalana, literally trampler of pride, with twelve wheel. This Chariot is decked with a covering of red and black cloth, black being traditionally associated with Shakti and the Mother goddess.

Appreciating Kalachandji's Community

TKG Academy Community Project (2009-2010)

On Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 11:30am  nine students and two teachers from TKG Academy delivered donated baby items; diapers and prasadam (cookies and cupcakes) to a non-profit agency called Alley's House. The staff at the center were excited  to recieve  these baby items and also to recieve the prasadam. Each student told why they decided to give.  To our surprise the Director and staff stated that they eat lunch at Kalachandji's Restaurant weekly. Also, the young ladies at Alley's House talked about how they appreciated people who help them. All the young ladies are going to school and seeking employment. They said  that it's not easy being a  single mother but they do have people around them that care. The lesson learned  is giving in charity and prasadam distribution can make a difference. TKG Academy would  like to say thank you to everyone who supported the diaper drive.
